Several City of Silvis officials along with business and community leaders joined Five Below store employees for the grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday. The store is located in the Silvis Twin Oaks Shopping Center at 2001 Fifth St. (next door to the Hy-Vee store).Five Below is a chain of specialty discount stores. Most items in the store range from $1 to $5. The chain was founded by David Schlessinger and Tom Vellios and is headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. There are currently more than 1,300 Five Below stores across the U.S.In addition to the newest Quad Cities location in Silvis, there are two Five Below stores in Davenport – at 4018 E. 53rd St. and 902 W. Kimberly Road. There also are Five Below stores in Sterling and Galesburg, Illinois.During Friday's grand opening ceremony of the Silvis store, dozens of customers were already shopping and buying many of the items on display. The shopping actually began Saturday, March 16, with a soft opening. The store now is open seven days a week. Hours are: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Mondays through Saturdays; and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Sundays.“The response has been phenomenal. … People have been coming up to our doors and asking when the store is going to open,” said Jennifer Draper, the general manager of the Silvis Five Below store, during the grand opening.She added the store is already getting many customers because of its great customer service offered by its 20 employees. Also, the store offers a wide variety of merchandise. Some of those items include candy (under a section of the store labeled “Sugar Rush”) as well as jump ropes, toys, shirts, cups, cards and other unique items. Some of those include desktop drum sets and miniature skateboards. The employees at the Silvis store also were busy greeting and helping customers find needed items. Most of the employees on Friday were dressed in blue and gray T-shirts with the slogan “Let Go & Have Fun!”The store also features signs that highlight a whimsical sense of humor. For instance, as customers leave the store, a sign above the doors reads: “See you soon! Like tomorrow probably. Not kidding. OK, see you then.”“This store adds to the community. …. Welcome to the family,” Mr. Carter said during Friday’s grand opening events.
