Toastmasters hosts open house Thursday

Esprit de Corps Toastmasters is inviting area residents to its upcoming open house from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, to meet members and hear from guest speaker and Davenport Mayor Mike Matson.

“Esprit de Corps Toastmasters provides a supportive and positive environment where members have the opportunity to develop their communication and leadership skills,” said Toastmasters Club 5999 President Mike Cox in a news release.

The open house will be held in the Rock Island Arsenal Clock Tower Building Complex, 1500 Rock Island Lane. There, Mr. Matson will discuss the importance of communication and leadership skills for today’s professionals. Afterward, guests are invited to join members for a regular Toastmasters meeting that will include a prepared speech, Table Topics (or impromptu speeches) and evaluations.

“Table Topics are one of my favorite parts of the meeting,” said the club’s Vice President of Membership Mike Cummings in the release.

“This is where guests and members are randomly selected to speak for one to two minutes. It helps you think and speak clearly on your feet.”

Toastmasters Club 5999 meets each first and third Wednesdays from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the Rock Island Arsenal, typically at the Clock Tower Complex and online through hybrid meetings. A previous open house featured guest speaker and Davenport Alderman-At-Large Kyle Gripp.
