MAQUOKETA, Iowa – Gilda’s Club Quad Cities is offering a free overnight, week-long camp experience, Camp Genesis, for children and teens entering grades fourth through ninth who have been impacted by cancer in their family at Camp Shalom.
Through a collaborative partnership with Gilda’s Club QC, Camp Shalom and Genesis Cancer Care Institute, Camp Genesis will be held Sunday-Friday, June 18-23. A selection committee will determine camper eligibility, and priority will be given to first-time campers and those with a loved one in active treatment, according to a news release.
Camp will feature a chance for kids to get to know other kids who are impacted by cancer while enjoying activities such as archery, canoeing, rope courses, campfire circles, camp songs, swimming and more. It also includes group activities with Gilda’s Club Quad Cities staff members to talk about cancer and emotions.
Campers also will tour the Genesis Cancer Care Institute on a day trip to meet doctors and staff and see everything involved from diagnosis to treatment of cancer. The event will include time to ask questions in a safe environment to help make the cancer journey less frightening, the release said.
Parents can rest assured children are in a safe environment while building relationships with other campers who are facing similar situations.
Camp Genesis is funded by the Genesis Cancer Care Institute through the Genesis Foundation. To apply, visit www.gildasclubqc.org/camp.
