Cancer Support Community Iowa & NW Illinois at Gilda’s Club is calling for community donations after seeing a dramatic 45% increase in individuals served this year.

The surge comes as Iowa continues to face the second-highest cancer incidence rates in the nation. That’s according to the Iowa Cancer Registry.

The organization, which provides free social and emotional support to individuals and families living with cancer, emphasizes that this type of care is just as vital to recovery as medical treatment.

“More people are facing cancer in our community than ever before, and the emotional needs of those living with cancer coincide with their medical needs — both are essential for comprehensive care,” said Joy Bush, executive director of Cancer Support Community Iowa & NW Illinois at Gilda’s Club.

    Need is still growing

Over the past year, the need for services has grown significantly:

    • The number of individuals served increased by 45%.
    • The organization provided 2,322 free meals.
    • More than 749 free programs were offered through the third quarter.
    • Participation rose by 10% following the introduction of 10 new healthy lifestyle programs.
    • Over 250 free wigs were distributed.

The services, which have been offered for 27 years, include support groups, exercise classes, nutrition programs, and wig services. They all are free of charge.

“When I was diagnosed, I felt isolated and overwhelmed,” shared local participant Marsha. “If I had to pay to come to these programs and get well, I wouldn’t be able to come here and focus on getting better.”

Ms. Bush noted that the community’s generosity has helped meet current demand. But the organization must reach its year-end fundraising goal  to meet the growing need.

“Every gift ensures that those living with cancer don’t face this journey alone and can access the support they need to heal,” she added.
