Arsenal to host 50th annual holiday tree lighting Friday

    The Rock Island Arsenal will hold its 50th annual holiday tree lighting ceremony and celebration Friday, Dec. 5, at Quarters 1 on Gillespie Street from 4-7 p.m. The event is open to the public.

    Attendees will have the opportunity to meet Santa and Mrs. Claus, and the Grinch. The event will also feature a Holiday Vendor Bazaar for shopping and a chance to win prizes, including live trees.

    In the spirit of giving, the Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots will be present to accept donations of new and unwrapped toys.

    The ceremony will include live music from the Davenport and Bettendorf High School Choirs, as well as comments from Joint Munitions Command Commander, Brig. Gen. Daniel Duncan.

    Holiday snacks and beverages will be available for purchase at the FMWR food trailer. Visitors can also view the decorated Quarters 1 and the entrants in the tree decorating and gingerbread house competitions.
