More local military veterans are now eligible to go on the region’s Honor Flights to see the war memorials in Washington, D.C.
The Honor Flight of the Quad Cities organization this week announced that it has expanded its mission. The group is now accepting applications from any veteran who served before December of 1990.
This will include, but is not limited to, veterans of Grenada, Panama, Lebanon, and cold war soldiers who served around the globe. Any veteran who lives within 75 miles of the Quad Cities is eligible to apply.
To be placed on the hub’s waiting list for the honor flight, a veteran must submit an application along with his or her DD 214. Applications can be found at www.honorflightqc.org.
Near the bottom of the page visitors will see “Veteran Application.” Click there and download the application, then send the completed application to the address shown on the form.
“We also will need volunteers who would like to be a guardian and spend a wonderful and unforgettable day with a veteran as they both fly to D.C.. We strongly encourage adults of the area to consider this opportunity,” according to information from Honor Flight of the Quad Cities.
Since the local Honor Flight organization began, more than 6,000 local veterans have gone on the one-day flight to see memorials honoring their service. Most of these veterans served during World War II, Korea, or the Vietnam conflicts.
The local Honor Flights for next year have been set for Wednesday, May 6; Monday, June 1; and Tuesday, Sept. 22.
