The former interim chancellor of Eastern Iowa Community Colleges is about to start another new chapter in his life.
Liang Chee Wee was recently named the new interim president at Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC). He will begin his new job Jan. 1 and is scheduled to serve through June 30 while the college continues its search for a new president.
DMACC President Rob Denson is set to retire at the end of this year.
Mr. Wee’s distinguished career includes significant experience in strategic planning, workforce development, student support, legislative engagement, organizational culture, and community partnerships, according to a news release from DMACC.
“We are exceptionally fortunate to have a leader of Dr. Wee’s caliber and experience guide DMACC during this interim period,” said Kevin Halterman, president of the DMACC Board of Directors and chair of the presidential search committee. “His proven track record in community college leadership, his deep understanding of Iowa’s educational landscape, and his commitment to student success make him ideally suited for this role. DMACC will be in excellent hands as we conduct a thorough search for our next permanent president.”
“DMACC is a remarkable institution with outstanding students, faculty, and staff,” Mr. Wee said in a news release announcing his new role. “I am honored to serve in this interim capacity and look forward to supporting the College’s impactful mission of providing accessible, affordable, and outstanding educational experiences while working alongside the talented DMACC community.”
Mr. Wee became the EICC interim chancellor in October 2023, shortly after Sonya Williams resigned the chancellor post for personal reasons, according to EICC. He served in that position until Bryan Renfro became chancellor on July 1, 2025.
Mr. Wee came out of retirement to join EICC in a temporary role. Before coming to the Quad Cities, he had a long career as an educator at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, and prior to EICC served as president of Northeast Iowa Community College with campuses in Peosta and Calmar.
