A Freight House Farmers Market vendor will provide “pay what you want” meals this Saturday, Nov. 8, to benefit the River Bend Food Bank.

Pete Bednarczyk, owner of Pete’s Concessions, will offer meals from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday during the Freight House Farmers Market, located at 421 W. River Drive, Davenport.

Mr. Bednarczyk, a 25-year veteran of the concessions business, recently lost his contract to provide meals for Head Start programs in Clinton, Muscatine and Scott counties due to the current government shutdown. He noted families served by Head Start are not only losing the program’s breakfast and lunch, but many are also losing their SNAP/EBT benefits.

Inspired by Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror,” Mr. Bednarczyk decided to act. “I’m starting with the man in the mirror… somebody’s got to do something, and the only person who can do something is the person you’re looking at in the mirror,” he said in a news release from the farmers market. “I told myself — I need to do something. So, I’m calling it the ‘Man in the Mirror’ fundraiser.”

Mr. Bednarczyk, his family and staff are donating their time for the event. The menu will include biscuits and gravy, chicken tacos, chicken taco salad and funnel cakes, along with other favorites. All are welcome.

The suggested donation is “pay what you want.” Families showing their SNAP/EBT card and anyone donating non-perishable items will eat for free. All proceeds will go to the River Bend Food Bank in Davenport.
