The Quad Cities Area REALTORs (QCAR) has extended the deadline for its new Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU) design contest to Wednesday, Oct. 15, the Bettendorf-based association announced.
“We’ve seen growing interest in the contest and want to ensure that everyone who wishes to participate has the opportunity to do so,” Sharon Smith, QCAR’s chief executive officer, told the QCBJ. “By extending the deadline through October 15, we’re giving more members of our community the chance to showcase their creativity and ideas.”
The first-time competition is designed to increase awareness of ADUs as alternative housing options. Top designs will receive cash prizes. The top 12 winning designs will be posted on QCAR’s website and downloadable for the public.
In an earlier interview, Ms. Smith told the QCBJ that such units can aid a homeowner in creating rental income, or provide living space for an adult child or an aging parent. They are often referred to as “granny flats,” “in-law suites,” or “backyard cottages.”
The ADU design contest is open to industry professionals such as architects, builders and designers. Students in high school, college or a trade school also can enter.

“Our goal is to encourage as many submissions as possible and highlight the incredible talent we know is out there,” Ms. Smith added.
The contest was made possible after QCAR won one of 383 AARP Community Challenge grants in 2025. The $15,000 grant is allowing the association to offer prize money for local ADU designs both to the professional and student entries.
