Illinois residents can dispose of household hazardous wastes Oct. 11

    Illinois Quad Cities residents can dispose of household hazardous waste for free at an upcoming collection event on Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Rock Island County Fairgrounds, 4200 Archer Drive, East Moline.

    The one-day drop-off will be available from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Residents must reserve a drop-off time by visiting here. For more information, visit www.ricwma.org or call (309) 788-8925.

    Accepted items include: aerosol paint, anti-freeze, cleaning products, fluorescent light bulbs, gasoline, herbicides, household batteries, insecticides, mercury, oil-based paints, paint thinners, pesticides and used motor oil. Latex paint will not be accepted as it is not hazardous and can be air-dried and discarded with regular trash.

    Other materials not accepted are: agricultural chemicals, ammunition, appliances, business and commercial waste, controlled substances, electronics, explosives, farm oil, fireworks, fire extinguishers, lead batteries, needles, prescriptions or over-the-counter medications, propane tanks, smoke detectors and tires.

    The event is a collaboration between the Rock Island County Waste Management Agency and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.
