The Quad Cities Honor Flight is preparing for its 63rd mission on Tuesday, Sept. 16, taking more than 80 veterans and their volunteer guardians to Washington, D.C., to visit military memorials.

The trip, sponsored by local Hy-Vee Supermarkets and other donors, will be free for all participating veterans.

While the majority of veterans on this flight served during the Vietnam War, four Korean War veterans and one World War II veteran will also be joining them. The group will include several women who served, and a special stop will be made at the Women’s Memorial to honor them.

A highlight for all veterans will be the “Quad Cities Welcome Home” event at the Quad Cities International Airport around 10 p.m. on Sept. 16. The public is invited to welcome and cheer for the veterans as they return through security. Airport parking will be free that evening as a special thank you to the veterans, their families, neighbors and friends.

The greatest current need for Honor Flight is for veterans to apply. Veterans are encouraged to fill out an application at www.honorflightqc.org.

Volunteers are also needed to serve as guardians, spending an unforgettable day with a veteran on the flight to D.C. Adults in the area are strongly encouraged to consider this opportunity.

More details and application forms are available at www.honorflightqc.org, under the “Application Forms” box near the top of the page. Completed applications should be sent to the address on the form.
