After the success of an Egyptian trip last year, the Putnam Museum in Davenport is continuing to explore the world through its Travel Series. This year, the itinerary makes multiple stops in Greece and around the Greek Isles from Monday, Sept. 29, to Saturday, Oct. 11.
“The Putnam trip to Egypt in 2024 was exceptional. By the time we arrived in Egypt, we had a great understanding of what to expect from our prep meetings beforehand. I’m very excited to continue the travel series in Greece and the Greek Isles. We have ancient Greek artifacts in our collection which we’ll learn about as a group beforehand. The itinerary is very special because of the incredible scope of what we’ll be seeing. We’ll visit ancient sites, yes, but we’ll also have plenty of opportunities to lounge on beaches and shop in Mediterranean markets. It will certainly be a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” said Nora Moriarty, the assistant curator at the Putnam Museum.
The prep meetings are being hosted at the Putnam Museum from now until September. The first meeting was held at the beginning of January. Ms. Moriarty and Linda Meadors, a travel agent from Blue Horizon Travel, walked attendees through the itinerary and planned activities.
The next prep meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, in the Putnam Museum, with an introduction to Greek History and Art. Ms. Moriarty will be bringing ancient Greek artifacts out of collections for the presentation. People are invited to attend the March 12 session, or to find more information and sign up through the Putnam Museum’s website at www.putnam.org/greece-2025.
A major perk of group trips is a reduction in price for educational tours and ability to travel with like-minded people. The trip includes multiple learning opportunities in areas like the tomb of Agamemnon, the Temple of Zeus, and the original Olympic Games Arena. In addition to land tours, this trip will also include a seven-day cruise with overnight stops on world-famous, picturesque islands such as Mykonos and Santorini.
Currently, plans for traveling with the Putnam Museum in 2026 are in the works. Staff said they expect to announce these trips every year in December, to give people time to plan, prepare, and learn about the cultures beforehand.
