Project NOW hosts Drive-Thru Food Pantry Thursday, Aug. 31

Project NOW will help disperse food boxes through a Drive-Thru Food Pantry in front of its Rock Island office at 418 19th St. with help from volunteers from Amazon on Thursday, Aug. 31, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., while supplies last.

The boxes contain food that is 100% shelf-stable, including items such as mixed vegetables, peanut butter, applesauce, fruit, tuna, cornbread mix, oatmeal, cereal, shelf-stable milk and beef soup mix, according to Project NOW Community Services Director Ron Lund.

“We’re able to do this event due to the generosity of employees from Amazon who will be volunteering their time to run the event,” he said in an email to the QCBJ.

“Rock Island County has 27,894 individuals living in food deserts. These individuals live in neighborhoods that lack healthy food sources due to income level, distance to supermarkets or vehicle access,” he said.

“Too often we have seen individuals have to choose between rent, medications, utility bills or food.”
