MUSCATINE — Even though this is the dead of winter and many people are complaining about the cold weather, there’s a lot of health benefits to the cold.

That’s the word from the mother-daughter team of Laura Krieger and Lindsay Broders, the owners of a new health and wellness business L&L Cold Therapy. (L&L opened a few months ago inside Pearl City Chiropractic at 228 W. Second St.)

Since it opened, L&L has been offering its patients a variety of non-invasive treatments to help reduce pain and help them with their journey to wellness.

L&L’s theme is “No downtime. Non-invasive.”

“My favorite part of the job is seeing the stress relief on people’s faces when they leave. It’s like seeing a weight lifted off their shoulders. Helping people find things that help them feel better on purpose is our true passion,” said Ms. Broders.

L&L uses localized cryotherapy treatments to help many people who are suffering from arthritis, bursitis, nerve pain, and post-surgery recovery — such as knee surgery, to name just a few of the conditions they deal with, she added.

Since its launch, L&L has been serving about 50 patients who are getting a lot of relief from painful conditions.

“When people come here, they report their pain is gone. … They have about 80% less pain on a daily basis,” Ms. Broders said.

She gave this example of how L&L helped one person: “I work with someone who was in a boating accident that had a bad spinal injury and was told walking for her might be hard the rest of her life. Being bedridden and full of meds, she had gained weight and was always bloated because her body had a hard time healing. We helped her with cold therapy, lymphatic drainage massage, and reflexology once per week. After a few months, she lost weight, was feeling healthy enough to attend yoga classes, and started walking without her walker. Turns out relieving the body of inflammation can really help the healing process.”

One of the most popular treatments at L&L is cold therapy — or Kassen cryotherapy — which uses a handheld device to spray liquid carbon dioxide (CO2) to specific areas of the body. This causes localized thermal shock that helps increase blood flow and nutrient delivery to the treated area. This process can help reduce pain, inflammation and swelling, while also promoting healing and improving skin tone. Also, it reduces inflammation, soreness, and tension in muscles, according to information from L&L.

But Ms. Krieger said that perhaps the most popular treatment they provide is the lymphatic body suit. That suit offers tailored pressure therapy massages combined with inhalation of air-enriched oxygen that activates the lymphatic system to boost the metabolism. It also helps reduce inflammation and detox the body.

During a recent ribbon cutting ceremony hosted by Greater Muscatine Chamber of Commerce & Industry (GMCCI), that lymphatic body suit, cold therapy work and other treatments of L&L were praised by local business leaders.

“It is next to impossible to be in a bad mood around Laura and Lindsay. This mother-daughter duo is the human manifestation of joy and positivity, which makes them the perfect fit for Muscatine’s news wellness center. Their mission is to help their clients ‘feel good on purpose’ through common sense and holistic detox, pain management and rejuvenation therapies,” according to a GMCCI statement.

Treatments offered at L&L are not covered by health insurance. Some of the costs include: $45 per visit for the lymphatic body suit; $55 for cold therapy face treatment; and $35 for cold therapy pain treatment.

Ms. Broders said one of her future goals is to get the treatments eligible for health savings accounts. Another big goal is to eventually bring more equipment into L&L to help with wellness treatments for patients.

But the main goals will remain to help people get healthy and get rid of pain, and educate them to the benefits of alternative approaches to healing.

“All of this makes people look forward to coming in here,” said Ms. Krieger.
